Territories of Re-existence: Gamboa de Baixo and the Old Centre of Salvador (Brazil).
Introduction: The Old Centre of Salvador (Brazil) tells many stories about re-existing in the face of
colonial violence and its continuities. The story of Gamboa de Baixo is that of a traditional fishing community that, for decades, has re-existed amid ongoing reconfigurations of urban space, through which urban life is subordinated to capitalist interests and marginalized populations are displaced from their territories. Speaking from within the territory of Gamboa de Baixo, Ana Caminha will reflect on the community’s struggle for the right to live and work in the Old Centre – a struggle led by Black women, in which alliances and collective memories play a central role. Her presentation will be complemented by insights from the doctoral research of Gabriela Iracema Randig.
