Roberta Maierhofer’s Guest Lecture (May 14, 2025)

On May 14th, 2025, our RTG had the pleasure of welcoming Prof. Dr. Roberta Maierhofer (Univ. of Graz) to Eichstätt. Known for her work in American (literary) age studies (especially the intersection of age and gender), Roberta Maierhofer gave a talk on Agnès Varda and JR’s 2017 documentary Visages Villages. In “Faces, Places, and Moments of Connections: Visages Villages (2017) by Agnès Varda and JR as Intergenerational Representations of Time and Place”, Roberta Maierhofer centred the overarching theme of our RTG (place) and connected the places in the documentary to concepts of time and age(ing) by additionally focusing on the intergenerational connection of Varda and JR. Her talk touched upon the construction of places by outlining Varda and JR’s journey through France and their visiting and practicing different places through their art. By focusing on the moments of connection in the documentary, the inseparableness of time and place was highlighted, and the liminality of time as well as the (momentary) situatedness of place lend itself to a discussion of the dynamic and performative nature of the imaginative reflection of beauty provided by Visage Villages.
